Public health and tobacco control advocates in Nigeria have raised concerns over emerging strategies being adopted by tobacco companies to reach young people.
The advocates say tobacco marketing is becoming increasingly sophisticated, with social media, influencer promotions and corporate sponsorships being used to attract younger audiences.
The concerns were raised at a two-day capacity-building workshop organised for alliance members and public health advocates from across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones in Abuja.
Participants examined ways to strengthen tobacco control monitoring and advocacy, particularly in response to changing marketing strategies within the industry.
They stressed the need for stronger collaboration among tobacco control advocates to identify emerging tactics, improve monitoring and strengthen efforts aimed at protecting young people from tobacco use.
The workshop also focused on building the capacity of advocates to support more effective tobacco control interventions across the country.
