A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Adeniyi Adeyemi after he failed to appear for his scheduled arraignment on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the warrant following an oral application by the prosecution after the defendant was absent when the case was called.
According to the charges filed by the Nigeria Police Force, Adeyemi and two other suspects currently at large allegedly conspired to forge presidential appointment letters, State House letterheads and other official documents.
The prosecution also accused Adeyemi of falsely presenting himself as the Director-General of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, an agency the Presidency has confirmed does not exist.
Counsel to the defendant told the court that his client stayed away because he feared for his life and had written to President Bola Tinubu, saying he wanted to remain alive to face trial.
In response, Justice Umar said the court would “help him be alive” before granting the prosecution’s request for a bench warrant.
The matter was adjourned until September 30 for Adeyemi’s arraignment.
