Trump Gives Hamas Ultimatum On Gaza Deal

US President Donald Trump gave Hamas an ultimatum of “three or four days” on Tuesday to respond to his plan for Gaza, as the militant group reviewed the proposal backed by Israel.

The plan calls for a ceasefire, release of hostages by Hamas within 72 hours, disarmament of Hamas and gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, followed by a post-war transitional authority headed by Trump himself.

World powers, including Arab and Muslim nations, welcomed the proposal, but Hamas had yet to issue its response.

“We’re going to do about three or four days,” Trump told reporters when asked about any timeframe.

“We’re just waiting for Hamas, and Hamas is either going to be doing it or not. And if it’s not, it’s going to be a very sad end.”

Trump announced the deal at the White House on Monday after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Tuesday, a Palestinian source said on condition of anonymity that Hamas had begun consultations on the plan “within its political and military leaderships, both inside Palestine and abroad.”

“The discussions could take several days due to the complexities,” the source said.

Qatar, which hosts Hamas’s exiled leadership, said the group had promised to study the proposal “responsibly”, and also said it would hold a meeting with Hamas and Turkey later on Tuesday.

“It is still too early to speak about responses, but we are truly optimistic that this plan, as we said, is a comprehensive one,” foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said.

The deal demands that Hamas militants fully disarm and be excluded from future roles in the government, but those who agreed to “peaceful co-existence” would be given amnesty.

It would also see a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, after nearly two years of war sparked by Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

But in a video statement posted after the joint press conference with Trump, Netanyahu said the military would stay in most of Gaza, and also that he did not agree to a Palestinian state during his talks in Washington.

“We will recover all our hostages, alive and well, while the (Israeli military) will remain in most of the Gaza Strip,” he said.

Still, Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a member of Netanyahu’s coalition government, blasted the plan as a “resounding diplomatic failure”.

“In my estimation, it will also end in tears. Our children will be forced to fight in Gaza again,” he said.

Trump’s plan includes deployment of a “temporary international stabilisation force” — and the creation of a transitional authority headed by Trump himself and including former British premier Tony Blair.

During his press conference with Trump, Netanyahu cast doubt on whether the Palestinian Authority, which nominally runs Palestinian population centres in the occupied West Bank, would be allowed a role in Gaza’s governance.

Trump noted that during their meeting Netanyahu had strongly opposed any Palestinian statehood — something that the US plan leaves room for.

“I support your plan to end the war in Gaza which achieves our war aims,” Netanyahu said.

“If Hamas rejects your plan, Mr President, or if they supposedly accept it and then basically do everything to counter it, then Israel will finish the job by itself.”

Trump said that Israel would have his “full backing” to do so if Hamas did not accept the deal.

Reaction was global, and swift. Key Arab and Muslim nations, including mediators Egypt and Qatar, hailed the agreement’s “sincere efforts” in the wake of their own talks with Trump last week.

Washington’s European allies promptly voiced support, with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Italy sharing strong expressions of support for the plan, while China and Russia also declared their backing.

But in Gaza, people were sceptical.

“It’s clear that this plan is unrealistic,” 39-year-old Ibrahim Joudeh told AFP from his shelter in the so-called humanitarian zone of Al-Mawasi in southern Gaza.

“It’s drafted with conditions that the US and Israel know Hamas will never accept. For us, that means the war and the suffering will continue,” said the computer programmer, originally from the southern city of Rafah, devastated by a military offensive that began in May.

Israeli air strikes and shelling continued across Gaza on Tuesday, according to the territory’s civil defence agency and witnesses.

The Palestinian Authority welcomed Trump’s “sincere and determined efforts.”

Hamas ally Islamic Jihad, on the other hand, said the plan would fuel further aggression against Palestinians.

“Through this, Israel is attempting — via the United States — to impose what it could not achieve through war,” the group said in a statement.

The Gaza war was triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that killed 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s offensive has reduced much of Gaza to rubble and killed 66,055 Palestinians, also mostly civilians, according to health ministry figures in the Hamas-run territory that the United Nations considers reliable.

120 Iranians Deported From US To Arrive Home This Week

0

Iran announced on Tuesday that 120 nationals being deported from the United States under President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown will return home this week.

“120 people should be deported and flown home over the next couple of days,” said Hossein Noushabadi, a foreign ministry consular affairs official, in comments to the Tasnim news agency.

According to Noushabadi, the US immigration service has decided to deport around 400 Iranians currently in the United States, most of whom entered illegally.

The New York Times reported that about 100 Iranians who had sought refuge in the US were being deported under an agreement between Washington and Tehran, following months of negotiations.

An aircraft chartered by US authorities reportedly left Louisiana on Monday evening, with a stopover in Qatar before heading to Tehran. The paper described the move as “the most stark push yet by the Trump administration to deport migrants even to places with harsh human rights conditions.”

Earlier this year, the US deported several Iranians, many of them Christians, to Costa Rica and Panama.

The US State Department has not yet commented on the deportations.

Alleged Cybercrime: Court Fixes October 27 For Sowore’s Arraignment

0

Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has fixed October 27, 2025, for the arraignment of human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on alleged cybercrime charges.

The scheduled arraignment on Tuesday was stalled due to the non-service of the five-count charge on Sowore.

At the proceedings, the Director of Public Prosecutions from the Ministry of Justice told the court that the government was ready to arraign Sowore, X Corporation, and Meta (Facebook) Inc., as first to third respondents.

Sowore’s counsel, Marshal Abubakar, however, informed the court that his client had not been served with the charges. Counsel for the third respondent also aligned with this submission, stating that he had only just been served in court. The second defendant was unrepresented.

The case involves an alleged offensive post Sowore made on his official X handle on August 25, which the prosecution said contravenes Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had earlier filed the charges against Sowore, X Corp, and Meta, accusing him of posting false and inciting statements about President Bola Tinubu. The DSS had on September 8 issued Sowore a one-week ultimatum to delete the post, which expired on September 15 without compliance.

In response, Sowore filed two fundamental rights suits at the Federal High Court against the DSS, Meta, and X Corp, challenging what his lawyers described as “unconstitutional censorship” of his accounts.

His legal team, led by Tope Temokun, argued that the matter was about safeguarding free speech in Nigeria, warning that “if state agencies can dictate to global platforms who may speak and what may be said, then no Nigerian is safe, their voices will be silenced at the whims of those in power.”

Saliba Signs New Long-Term Deal At Arsenal

0

Arsenal defender William Saliba has signed a new five-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2030, the Premier League side confirmed on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old France international, whose previous deal was due to expire in 2027, had been linked with Real Madrid but opted to extend his stay at the Emirates.

Saliba joined Arsenal in 2019 and, after several loan spells, became a key figure under Mikel Arteta from the 2022/23 season. He has since anchored a side that finished second in the Premier League for three consecutive years.

“I feel at home. We have a good team, a good squad, and good staff. The coach is perfect for me, so it’s the best place to be,” Saliba said. “I enjoy every day wearing this shirt. I try to give everything, and now I’ll give even more to this club and to the fans.”

Manager Mikel Arteta praised the defender’s commitment, saying: “William is loved by all the players and staff, and that speaks volumes about his character, commitment, and attitude every day. Since joining us, William has grown so much, embraced responsibility, and has created a strong connection with our supporters and everyone at the club.”

Arsenal currently sit second in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Liverpool after six matches.

A student of Ebonyi State University was shot on Tuesday during the Students’ Union Government (SUG) election as results were being announced.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed that:

  • Three suspects were arrested at the scene.
  • A locally made pistol was recovered.
  • The victim was rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for treatment.

Police spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu said the suspects fired a gunshot in an attempt to disperse the crowd during the collation of results. He added that the suspects remain in custody and will be arraigned after investigations.

Hamas Yet To Respond On Trump’s Gaza Plan

Hamas has yet to respond to US President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, even as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly endorsed it on Monday.

The plan calls for:

  • A ceasefire.
  • Release of hostages by Hamas within 72 hours.
  • Disarmament of Hamas.
  • Gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
  • A post-war transitional authority headed by Trump himself, with participation from figures such as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egypt’s intelligence chief Hassan Mahmoud Rashad met with Hamas negotiators and presented the plan. A Hamas official said they would review it “in good faith” before giving a response.

Netanyahu, in a video statement after his joint press conference with Trump, said:

  • Israel’s military would remain in most of Gaza.
  • Israel would not agree to a Palestinian state.
  • All hostages would be recovered “alive and well.”

“If Hamas rejects your plan, Mr President, or if they supposedly accept it and then basically do everything to counter it, then Israel will finish the job by itself,” Netanyahu warned.

Trump insisted peace was “beyond very close,” describing the proposal as a “bold and intelligent” solution. He assured Israel of his “full backing” if Hamas rejected the plan.

Reactions were divided:

  • Egypt and Qatar praised the “sincere efforts.”
  • Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and EU chief Antonio Costa voiced strong support.
  • In Gaza, residents expressed scepticism, calling the plan “unrealistic” and unlikely to be accepted by Hamas.
  • Islamic Jihad denounced it as a US-Israeli attempt to impose war outcomes.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces continued airstrikes and operations across Gaza, with the military reporting over 160 targets hit in the past 24 hours.

The war, triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that killed 1,219 people, has left at least 66,055 Palestinians dead, mostly civilians, according to Gaza health officials and UN-verified figures.

2027 Polls: Presidency Welcomes Jonathan To Presidential Race

0

The Presidency has welcomed former President Goodluck Jonathan’s move to join the 2027 presidential race, describing it as his “inalienable right.”

In a statement issued on Monday, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said President Bola Tinubu would “wholeheartedly welcome” Jonathan if he decides to contest but insisted that Nigerians will remember what he called Jonathan’s “disastrous record in office.”

Onanuga dismissed comments by Professor Jerry Gana, who suggested Jonathan could return on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform and defeat Tinubu, cautioning the former president against being lured into the race by party loyalists.

The full statement from the Presidency reads:

FORMER PRESIDENT JONATHAN IS WELCOME TO THE RACE. NIGERIANS WILL REMEMBER HIS DISMAL RECORD IN OFFICE

As we begin the march towards the 2027 elections prematurely foisted on the nation by the desperation of the opposition ganging up against President Bola Tinubu despite his glaring giant economic strides, we are once again regaled with a cacophony of voices, most of them full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, to paraphrase inimitable Williams Shakespeare in one of his classic works, Macbeth.

One recent statement that stands out in its absurdity is Professor Jerry Gana’s. The former Minister of Information and National Orientation, moving to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2007 presidential race, affirmed that the former president would contest the coming election on the platform of the discredited People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which bequeathed a legacy of economic ruins, after 16 years of bad governance.

Gana even deluded himself, asserting that the former President would defeat President Tinubu to reclaim power after 12 years.

Prof. Gana of the defunct MAMSER fame is free to delude himself and engage in his usual comedy; after all, Jonathan’s entering the race would provide another job for the Niger State-born former university don.

However, we should caution former President Jonathan to be wary of the PDP sugar-coated cheerleaders. Politicians of Jerry Gana’s ilk merely want to lure him into the race to satisfy their personal, political, religious, and ethnic interests. They will abandon him midstream, as they did in 2015, and leave Gentleman Jonathan in the lurch.

Don’t get us wrong: President Jonathan reserves the right to run if he wishes. It is his inalienable right to contest the presidency again. President Tinubu will wholeheartedly welcome him if he decides to enter the race.  But Jonathan will have his date in the court of the land. Indeed, the jury will determine whether Jonathan, who was sworn in twice as president, satisfies the constitutional requirements and is eligible to contest the presidency and be sworn in, if successful, for a third term in office.

Shorn of all those selfish considerations for which some PDP big guns find his candidacy appealing, President Jonathan will also have his encounter with the people as to whether he has anything new to offer after his disastrous six years, for which they voted him out in 2015.

Let us remind ourselves about Jonathan’s record. We cannot forget in a hurry how his regime, devoid of any clear economic agenda, engaged in frivolous spending, ran the economy aground and put the country in dire straits. The nation’s economic downturn, which President Tinubu is working very hard to overcome, actually began under President Jonathan. The Jonathan administration severely damaged the economy, and all key indicators declined under his watch. Under him, the so-called business moguls allocated foreign exchange to import fuel, simply pocketing the dollars without importing anything. Some of those big men still have court cases on the issue today.

Jonathan and his National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), freely distributed security funds to friends and cronies.

In 2010, President Jonathan inherited a total of $66 billion, of which $46 billion was in foreign reserves and $20 billion in the noble-but-abused Excess Crude Account. By 2015, when the people democratically removed him from office, the foreign reserves had fallen below $30 billion, and the Excess Crude Account had been depleted to $2 billion, despite generating record revenue from crude oil sales that the country had never achieved in more than 25 years combined.

It is on record that between 2010 and 2013, crude oil sold for an average of $100 per barrel. By December 2014, however, the Jonathan-led Federal Government could no longer pay salaries to Federal Civil Servants. At least 28 states across the country owed workers huge salary arrears.

In contrast, President Tinubu has taken bold decisions over the last 28 months to reset the economy, removing the ruinous fuel subsidy and abolishing multiple exchange rates, which paved the way for arbitrage to flourish. The President has stabilised the economy in slightly over two years in office. In 2025 Q2, the Gross Domestic Product grew by 4.23%, the highest in four years, outpacing the 3.4% projected by the International Monetary Fund.  Inflation decreased to 20.12% in August 2025, the lowest level in three years.  The foreign reserves stand presently at $42. 03 billion. The Naira has virtually stabilised. Investor confidence in our economy has been restored, and investors are betting on Nigeria.

In plain language, the nation has turned the corner. And our people have started reaping the gains of the bold reforms instituted by the Tinubu administration. Road infrastructure is being boosted. Old roads are being reconstructed while new ones, like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, among others, are springing up. The government is addressing security issues in some parts of the country.

We can go on and on, reeling out the many macroeconomic gains of the Tinubu administration. However, the point is that the PDP and Jerry Gana’s co-travellers broke the economy; President Tinubu is fixing it.

President Jonathan and others are welcome to the 2027 race. They broke the economy before, but millions of Nigerians, who will not easily forget the recent past, will not allow them to return and run it down again.

Special Adviser to the President

FG Cancels Independence Day Parade

0

The Federal Government has cancelled the parade earlier scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2025.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Director of Information and Public Relations Segun Imohiosen said the decision does not diminish the significance of the milestone celebration.

“The government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the statement read.

It added that all other programmes slated for the anniversary — themed “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation” — will hold as planned.

The government apologised for any inconvenience caused and urged Nigerians, the diplomatic community, and invited guests to support the reforms of President Bola Tinubu aimed at building a greater nation.

This comes after the Federal Government declared Wednesday, October 1, a public holiday to commemorate the Independence Anniversary.

Court Stops PENGASSAN, Regulators From Cutting Gas Supply To Dangote Refinery

0

The National Industrial Court in Abuja has issued an interim order stopping the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and key regulators from cutting crude oil and gas supply to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE amid an escalating labour dispute.

Justice Emmanuel Subilim, ruling on an ex parte application filed by the refinery, restrained PENGASSAN, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) from enforcing any supply cuts.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria George Ibrahim, representing the refinery, argued that recent incidents of sabotage at the plant raised grave safety concerns and necessitated a reorganisation that led to the termination of some employees. He stressed that the company, with over 3,000 Nigerians on its workforce, only dismissed a “negligible number” of staff, contrary to union claims that over 800 workers were laid off for unionising.

PENGASSAN, through its General Secretary Lamumba Ighotemu Okugbawa, had threatened to take actions that would cripple the refinery unless the dismissed workers were reinstated.

In his ruling, Justice Subilim held that the balance of convenience favoured the refinery, warning that an industrial shutdown would irreparably damage its operations and disrupt essential services to the Nigerian public.

The restraining order is to last seven days, with the matter adjourned to October 13, 2025 for hearing of the substantive motion.
