FIFA Sanctions South Africa For Fielding Ineligible Player In World Cup Qualifier

0

World football governing body FIFA has sanctioned South Africa for fielding an ineligible player during a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, overturning their victory and imposing a fine.

FIFA announced on Monday that South Africa’s 2-0 win on March 21 in Polokwane has been forfeited and replaced with a 3-0 defeat. The ruling drops South Africa to second place in Group C of the African Zone qualifiers, behind Benin on goal difference, while Lesotho remain fifth.

According to FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, South Africa breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code by fielding Teboho Mokoena, who was suspended after accumulating two yellow cards in previous matches against Benin and Zimbabwe.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has been fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($12,536) and retains the right to appeal the decision to the FIFA Appeals Committee.

NELFUND Closes Portal For 2024/2025 Loan

0

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced the closure of its application portal for the 2024/2025 academic session on Tuesday.

In an update posted on X, the agency said the decision was to allow it to conclude processing of pending applications and upkeep payments.

NELFUND also outlined timelines for the 2025/2026 academic cycle aimed at expanding access to higher education through interest-free student loans. The portal will reopen in the second week of October for fresh applications and remain open until January 2026.

NELFUND remains committed to removing financial barriers for students and working with institutions to ensure that no eligible student is left behind. These timelines provide clarity for students, parents, and institutions to plan and participate fully in the process,” the agency stated.

Managing Director of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, confirmed the development on Monday in Abuja and directed institutions to update students’ records on the Student Verification System to enable applicants to access the scheme.

He noted that all unverified applications for 2024/2025 would be automatically cancelled after October 8, with affected students required to reapply under the new session.

Sawyerr warned that institutions failing to verify students’ records risk being publicly listed for non-compliance.

On upkeep stipends, he explained that payment for the 2024/2025 session would continue until November, adding that students would need to reapply for 2025/2026 to continue receiving payments.

Responding to concerns about upkeep stipends, Sawyerr said the current ₦20,000 monthly allowance would not be increased immediately.

On repayment terms, he reiterated that the scheme remains interest-free, with repayment beginning two years after completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and employers mandated to deduct 10 percent of beneficiaries’ salaries.

Indonesia Fines TikTok Over Late Tokopedia Acquisition Notification

0

Indonesia’s antitrust agency has fined TikTok 15 billion rupiah (about $900,000) for failing to notify regulators on time about its acquisition of e-commerce platform Tokopedia.

TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, completed an $840 million deal in January 2024 to acquire 75.01 percent of Tokopedia from PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia, which retained the remaining stake. The acquisition allowed TikTok to relaunch its online shopping service in Indonesia after the government banned social media-based sales to protect small businesses.

Deswin Nur, spokesperson for the Indonesia Competition Commission (KPPU), said TikTok Nusantara (SG) Pte — the entity established for the transaction — failed to notify the agency within the required timeframe.

“Although KPPU previously conditionally approved this acquisition and assessed that it has no negative impact on business competition, administrative negligence was still categorised as a violation,” Deswin stated. “Notification must still be submitted in a timely manner by the acquiring business entity.”

A TikTok spokesperson told AFP the company respected KPPU’s ruling and remained committed to upholding fair business competition principles.

Dangote Refinery Accuses PENGASSAN Of Lies, Intimidation Tactics

0

Dangote Refinery has accused the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) of spreading falsehoods and using intimidation tactics to disrupt its operations.

In a statement titled “Lawless PENGASSAN – Its Lies and Terror Tactics”, the company said the union had embarked on a campaign of misinformation aimed at destabilising its workforce and disrupting production.

“PENGASSAN has chosen to peddle falsehoods and spread propaganda with the sole aim of tarnishing our reputation and inciting unrest among our employees,” the refinery said.

It alleged that the union was attempting to destabilise the refinery through coercion. “Their method is nothing short of intimidation, designed to instil fear and exert undue pressure on our staff,” the statement added.

Dangote Refinery maintained it would continue to uphold lawful labour practices and resist what it described as bullying. “We will continue to uphold the rule of law and resist any attempt by PENGASSAN to derail the progress of this refinery,” it stressed.

The company accused the union of deliberately undermining industrial harmony for selfish purposes, warning that such actions threatened not just the company but Nigeria’s broader economic stability.

“We cannot allow a handful of individuals hiding under the guise of unionism to sabotage a national asset of this magnitude,” the statement read.

Dangote Refinery said it had consistently engaged with stakeholders in good faith and would remain open to genuine dialogue but warned it would not allow intimidation or misinformation to derail its mandate.

“We urge Nigerians to see through the lies and propaganda of PENGASSAN and recognise the refinery’s commitment to building an industry that benefits all,” it added.

Court Rules Pat Utomi’s Shadow Cabinet Illegal

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained Professor Pat Utomi and his associates from going ahead with their plan to establish a shadow government or cabinet in Nigeria.

Delivering judgment in a suit filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), Justice James Omotosho declared the shadow government concept unconstitutional and incompatible with the country’s presidential system.

He held that Utomi and his associates could not rely on the rights to association and criticism of government to engage in activities deemed unlawful.

Justice Omotosho commended the DSS for bringing the action and ruled that the agency is within its powers to take steps to prevent acts capable of threatening national security.

Gunman Kills Four In Attack On Northern US Mormon Church

0

Police in the northern US state said the shooter first rammed the church with his vehicle before opening fire with an assault rifle, and then set the building on fire.

A man opened fire in a Mormon church in Michigan and set the building ablaze on Sunday, killing at least four people in the latest deadly tragedy that US President Donald Trump called part of a national “epidemic of violence.”

Police in the northern US state said the shooter first rammed the church with his vehicle before opening fire with an assault rifle, and then set the building on fire.

The attacker was killed by police in the parking lot eight minutes after the first emergency call came in, Grand Blanc Police Chief William Renye told a news conference.

Renye said that, in addition to two deceased victims announced earlier in the day, two more bodies had been recovered among debris at the burned-down church, with search efforts ongoing.

He said earlier that eight people had also been wounded in the attack, one of whom was in critical condition.

AFP journalists in the adjacent town of Burton saw a large police presence outside the home of the suspected shooter, whom Renye identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, aged 40.

Renye and other officials did not provide any further details on Sanford. US media reports said he had grown up in the area and was a military veteran.

Images of the aftermath at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, a suburb of the city of Flint, showed most of the building reduced to ashes.

Authorities said the suspect used an accelerant, believed to be gasoline, and set fire to the church “deliberately.”

Some suspected explosive devices were found but it was unclear if they were used to start the fire, they said.

Photos also showed the truck apparently driven by the attacker into the side of the building, with two US flags on poles in the vehicle’s rear.

FBI Special Agent Reuben Coleman told the news conference that the FBI was now leading the investigation and was looking at the attack “as an act of targeted violence.”

Renye said earlier that hundreds were inside when the attack began and that more victims might be found among the debris.

Trump called the shooting “horrendous” and said it was “yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Sunday’s attack a “tragic act of violence.”

“Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection. We pray for peace and healing for all involved,” it wrote on social media platform X.

Founded in 1830, the Mormon church considers itself a Christian body but bases its doctrines on the Book of Mormon, a text its followers say contains a fuller version of the words of Jesus Christ than that recorded in the Bible.

Based in the western US state of Utah, there are Mormon churches all over the world, with millions of adherents.

The United States, where firearms are readily available, has a long history of gun violence.

But tensions have soared in recent weeks after a series of high-profile attacks, including the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk in Utah and a deadly shooting at a federal immigration enforcement facility in Texas.

Sunday’s attack also comes a month after a mass shooting at a Catholic church and school in Minnesota, in which two children were killed while attending Mass, and several others were severely wounded.

Political divisions have grown deeper in the wake of the attacks, with Trump launching a campaign targeting left-wing groups he accuses of being “domestic terrorists.”

Trump wrote in his Truth Social post Sunday: “THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!”

The head of the Mormon church, Russell Nelson, died on Saturday at age 101 in Utah, the church earlier announced.

Trump in a separate post said Nelson — who worked as a heart surgeon before taking on church leadership roles — was “a physician, literally and spiritually, and will be greatly missed!”

Shettima Promises Stronger Engagement With Nigerians In Diaspora

0

Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured Nigerians living abroad of greater inclusion in the policies and programmes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, urging them to continue believing in their home country.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Nigerian community in the United States on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Shettima said Nigeria was on the “right track” with reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Each one of you has value addition capabilities in your own way, and your experience is not something you can buy in the market. You have earned it. Continue to believe in Nigeria. Nigeria is on the right track. In the fullness of time, we will occupy our rightful place in the community of nations,” he said in a statement issued by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha.

Shettima highlighted Nigeria’s positive developmental indices as proof of the Tinubu administration’s policies, citing rising foreign reserves crossing the $40 billion mark, increased revenues for subnationals, and unprecedented infrastructural investments nationwide. He also pointed to initiatives such as NELFUND to support students and youth.

Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, noted that Nigerians were achieving “giant strides abroad,” adding that under the current administration it had become easier to obtain passports and process non-resident Bank Verification Numbers (BVN).

She urged Nigerians overseas to seize growing investment opportunities in Nigeria’s economy, which she said is being transformed. Participants at the meeting expressed readiness to invest in sectors including mining, health, AI, fintech, creative industries, and agriculture.

PENGASSAN Barricades NNPCL, NMDPRA, NUPRC As Nationwide Strike Begins

0

Members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) on Monday barricaded the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in Abuja, as well as the offices of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), in compliance with a nationwide strike directive from its national executive committee.

The union members, chanting solidarity songs, are protesting the alleged illegal dismissal of over 800 Nigerian workers by the management of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. They accused the refinery of violating Nigeria’s labour laws, the Constitution, and International Labour Organisation conventions by sacking workers for joining the association.

PENGASSAN also alleged that the refinery replaced the dismissed workers with “over 2,000 Indians,” calling the action “an affront to all workers in Nigeria.”

In a circular issued after an emergency National Executive Council meeting on Saturday, September 27, 2025, and signed by General Secretary Lumumba Okugbawa, the union directed:

  • All members working in field locations to withdraw services effective 06:00 hrs on Sunday, September 28, and commence 24-hour prayers, including all control room, panel, and outfield operations.
  • All members across offices, companies, institutions, and agencies to withdraw services effective 00:01 on Monday, September 29, 2025.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery last week defended the reorganisation that led to the dismissals, saying it was aimed at preventing sabotage, addressing safety concerns, and boosting operational efficiency.
