The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reaffirmed its commitment to neutrality, operational excellence and the integrity of the ballot as Nigeria begins the final 100-day countdown to the 2027 General Election.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance at a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting in Abuja, saying the Commission has moved from planning to full implementation of its election preparations.

Amupitan says election materials are already in production, technology is undergoing quality assurance, the voter register has been finalised for public display and election personnel are being systematically trained.

He disclosed that more than 10.7 million new voters were registered during three phases of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, bringing the National Register of Voters to 103 million. The register will be displayed for public scrutiny from October 9 to 15.

The INEC Chairman also announced that 18 of the 22 registered political parties submitted 36 presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the election.

On technology, Amupitan says production of 57,000 new Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, devices is at an advanced stage, while all configured devices will undergo stress testing from October 23 to 28. A nationwide mock accreditation exercise is also planned for November.

INEC will require more than 707,000 ad hoc personnel for each of the two election days scheduled for January 16 and February 6, 2027. The Commission is also working with transport unions to mobilise more than 100,000 vehicles and 4,000 boats for the movement of personnel and election materials.

On security, Amupitan says INEC is working with security and anti-corruption agencies to strengthen election security and tackle vote-buying, warning that offenders will face arrest and prosecution under the Electoral Act.

He also warned about the growing threat of disinformation, deepfakes, voice cloning and other AI-generated content, urging the media to verify election-related information before publication.

Representatives of political parties, the National Assembly, security agencies and the international community pledged their support for credible elections, while calling on INEC to maintain neutrality and transparency throughout the electoral process.
