The Federal Government has expanded its national tertiary institutions ranking to include universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, with participation now compulsory.
Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, says the initiative is aimed at strengthening quality, accountability and global competitiveness across Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
The 2026/2027 university ranking exercise is expected to begin in September, while the timetable for polytechnics and colleges of education will be announced later.
The government says the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, will provide funding for the exercise, while guidelines and capacity-building support will be developed for participating institutions.
Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, and Chairman of the Nigerian Universities Ranking Advisory Committee, Professor Peter Okebukola, also highlighted the importance of the ranking system in improving standards across tertiary institutions.
The government says the exercise will encourage healthy competition, help institutions identify performance gaps and provide a basis for continuous improvement.
In the 2026 Times Higher Education Nigeria ranking, the University of Ibadan and University of Lagos were jointly ranked first, followed by Bayero University Kano and Covenant University.
