Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have intercepted three disassembled canoes allegedly procured by a terrorist leader to support the movement of fighters across riverine areas in Zamfara State.
The Joint Task Force says the operation followed intelligence that the suspected terrorist leader, identified as Shehu Bagewaye, had arranged to obtain the canoes from Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State for transportation into Zamfara.
According to the military, the canoes were intended to help the fighters cross rivers that had restricted their movement and potentially expand their operational reach.
Acting on the intelligence, troops of Sector 2 carried out a covert operation on August 23 and intercepted the three disassembled canoes while they were being transported towards their intended destination.
The military says those conveying the items abandoned them and fled after sighting the troops.
The recovered canoes are now in military custody, while efforts are ongoing to identify and track individuals connected to the attempted movement.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA says it will continue intelligence-led operations aimed at disrupting terrorist logistics, movement and supply networks across the North-West.
