The long-awaited trial over the 1996 killing of American rapper Tupac Shakur has opened in Las Vegas, nearly three decades after his death.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former gang leader, is standing trial over allegations that he played a key role in organising the attack that led to Shakur’s death.
Prosecutors allege that Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, ordered the killing and provided the weapon used during the attack. He faces life imprisonment without parole if convicted.
The case has remained one of the most prominent unresolved murders in American entertainment history and has generated decades of speculation over who was responsible.
Investigators revived the case following statements Davis made publicly and details contained in his 2019 memoir, in which he acknowledged being in the vehicle linked to the incident.
Davis was arrested in September 2023 and has pleaded not guilty. His legal team has challenged the use of some of his previous statements and writings as evidence.
The trial is expected to begin with jury selection and could last about a month.
Tupac Shakur died at the age of 25 and remains one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history.
