Nigeria and The Gambia have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation by reviving the Nigeria-Gambia Joint Commission to review existing agreements and identify new areas of partnership.
The commitment was made during a meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and The Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sering Modou Njie, on the sidelines of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Ambassador Enikanolaiye described relations between both countries as cordial and longstanding, stressing the need for deeper collaboration to advance shared interests and regional development.
The Gambian Foreign Minister commended Nigeria’s role in restoring stability during The Gambia’s 2017 political crisis and acknowledged the country’s continued support through the Technical Aid Corps, military training programmes and contributions to the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia.
The meeting comes as West Africa faces political transitions, security challenges and renewed calls for stronger regional cooperation, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to the ideals of ECOWAS integration.
Both ministers also pledged to promote Pan-African unity, strengthen capacity development and deepen people-to-people ties as part of efforts to foster lasting peace, stability and economic growth across the region.
