Hugo Broos has confirmed he is stepping down as head coach of the South African national football team, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over his future.
The 74-year-old had indicated before the 2026 FIFA World Cup that he intended to retire, although he later considered remaining in charge following South Africa’s Round of 32 exit to co-hosts Canada.
Despite the uncertainty, the South African Football Association began the process of appointing a new coach, with reports linking former manager Pitso Mosimane to the role.
Speaking in his native Belgium, Broos confirmed he would not continue as head coach but expressed his willingness to support the national team in a consultancy capacity.
Broos was appointed in May 2021 and enjoyed a successful tenure, leading Bafana Bafana to consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, including a third-place finish at the 2023 edition, and guiding the team to the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
