The Senate Committee on Regional Development has questioned the North West Development Commission (NWDC) over alleged governance lapses, the delay in appointing executive directors and the expenditure of about ₦943 million on board allowances.
During an investigative session with officials of the Commission and the Federal Ministry of Regional Development, lawmakers expressed concern that the NWDC remains the only regional development commission without executive directors despite being among the first established by an Act of the National Assembly.
The committee also examined delays in convening board meetings, the implementation of board resolutions, staff recruitment and the execution of the Commission’s capital budget.
Responding to the concerns, Chairman of the Governing Board, Abdullahi Lawal, maintained that the board had operated in line with the provisions of the North West Development Commission Act, 2024.
Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, also informed the committee that the ministry had intervened to resolve the dispute over the Commission’s office accommodation in Kano.
At the end of the hearing, the Senate Committee resolved to proceed into an executive session to consider sensitive issues and obtain further clarifications from officials as part of its ongoing oversight of regional development commissions.
