Nigeria is seeking to position itself as a leader in Africa’s transition to a low-carbon economy, with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Government of France.

At the launch of the second phase of the Social Dimension of Ecological Transition Project in Abuja, government officials and development partners stressed the need to ensure that climate action creates jobs, protects workers and promotes inclusive economic growth.

The initiative builds on achievements recorded since 2020, including the development of Nigeria’s Just Transition Guidelines and Action Plan.

The National Council on Climate Change said the new phase will focus on translating climate commitments into practical benefits by expanding clean energy and clean cooking solutions, creating new value chains, supporting entrepreneurs and generating decent jobs, particularly for women and young people.

The Federal Government said the project aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 while driving economic development through job creation, business growth and improved livelihoods.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that stronger international cooperation would help ensure Nigeria’s transition to a climate-resilient economy delivers meaningful opportunities for citizens and leaves no one behind.
