The People’s Redemption Party (PRP) is facing a legal challenge over the eligibility of its presidential candidate, Donald Duke, following a suit filed by fellow aspirant Yakubu Kingsley.
A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed July 7 for hearing of the case after proceedings before Justice Mohammed Umar.
Kingsley is challenging Duke’s nomination, alleging that the former Cross River State governor failed to meet key eligibility requirements, including party membership registration and compliance with the party’s screening guidelines.
The plaintiff also alleged widespread irregularities during the party’s presidential primary, including over-voting in some states, and argued that the outcome of the exercise should be nullified.
During Monday’s proceedings, Kingsley’s counsel withdrew an ex parte application after informing the court that Duke had already filed a preliminary objection, paving the way for the substantive hearing.
The court subsequently directed that hearing notices be served on the PRP, Donald Duke and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the July 7 hearing.
Kingsley is asking the court to nullify Duke’s nomination, set aside results from the affected states, declare him the valid PRP presidential candidate and restrain INEC from recognising Duke as the party’s flagbearer.
