Peter Obi has been officially cleared by the Nigeria Democratic Congress as the party’s sole presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi appeared before the party’s National Screening Committee at the NDC national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday evening, accompanied by Victor Umeh.
The screening panel, chaired by former Minister of Education, Sam Egwu, said the former Anambra governor met all constitutional and electoral requirements required to participate in the party’s presidential primary.
Speaking after the exercise, Egwu announced that the committee was satisfied with Obi’s responses and credentials.
“This is to certify that following the screening of the presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), His Excellency Peter Obi, and being satisfied that he has complied with all the requirements of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and all provisions of the Electoral Act… he is hereby cleared to contest in the presidential primaries of the party for the 2027 presidential election,” Egwu stated.
Following the announcement, Obi was presented with an official clearance letter and the party’s presidential nomination form numbered 001.
The development comes days after Obi obtained the NDC presidential nomination and expression of interest forms on May 17.
The party had earlier extended the deadline for the collection of nomination forms for other categories of aspirants until May 24 to allow broader participation in the process. However, the NDC maintained that the deadline for presidential aspirants had already closed.
Obi remains the only presidential aspirant officially screened and cleared by the party so far ahead of its planned primary election.
