U-20 AFCON: Flying Eagles Beat Egypt On Penalties To Win Bronze

Date:

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles secured bronze at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a thrilling 4-1 penalty shootout victory over hosts Egypt, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The win marks Nigeria’s fifth bronze medal and 14th top-three finish in the tournament’s history. The Flying Eagles remain the most successful team in U-20 AFCON history, with eight titles to their name.

Match Recap

Egypt took an early lead in the 3rd minute through Osama Omar, capitalizing on a defensive lapse that unsettled Coach Aliyu Zubairu’s team.

But Bidemi Amole brought Nigeria level just after the restart, finishing coolly after a precision through-ball from Divine Oliseh.

Nigeria continued to press for a winner, with substitute Tahir Maigana and Kparobo Arierhi injecting pace and creativity into the attack. Egypt nearly snatched a late winner, but Mohamed El Sayed struck the crossbar, and Mohamed Haitham hit the post in a frantic closing phase.

Penalty Shootout Brilliance

The match proceeded to penalties after 90 minutes, where Nigeria’s composure shone through. The Flying Eagles converted all four of their spot kicks through:

  • Emmanuel Chukwu
  • Ayuma
  • Kparobo Arierhi
  • Tahir Maigana

Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt was the hero of the night, saving penalty efforts from Mohamed Atef and Ahmed Kabaka, silencing the home crowd and sealing Nigeria’s place on the podium.

Man of the Match

Adamu Maijari was named Man of the Match, praised for his composed and commanding performance in midfield.

Historical Significance

This bronze finish continues Nigeria’s rich tradition at the U-20 level, reinforcing their status as a powerhouse in African youth football. It also offers momentum for the next generation of Nigerian stars eyeing elevation to the senior Super Eagles squad.
