One Dead, Three Injured In Lagos Building Collapses

Date:

LAGOS, NIGERIA — One person has been confirmed dead and three others injured following the collapse of a one-storey building under construction in the Idi Araba area of Mushin, Lagos State, on Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the body of a deceased male was recovered around 8:18 p.m. by rescue officials. The three injured adult males sustained varying degrees of injuries and were promptly treated on-site before being transported to a hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

Incident Details

The collapse occurred at 96 Ishaga Road, directly opposite the Idi Araba Central Mosque, prompting a swift response from multiple emergency agencies. A distress call was received at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

Responding agencies included:

  • Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (Isolo Fire Station)
  • Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA)
  • Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps
  • Nigeria Police
  • Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS)

Search and rescue operations were immediately launched and remain ongoing as of Sunday evening.

Cause Under Investigation

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collapse. An investigation is currently underway to assess structural integrity issues and potential negligence.

Recurring Problem in Lagos

This marks the second building collapse in Lagos in less than a month. On April 19, 2025, a three-storey building on Oremeta Street in the Ojodu-Berger area collapsed, killing one and injuring several others. That structure was also under construction and housed a local restaurant.

An anonymous resident of the Idi Araba area told reporters that Sunday’s collapse occurred shortly after workers had arrived for the day.

“We heard a loud crash, and within seconds, people were screaming. It was terrifying,” the eyewitness recounted.

Authorities continue to warn developers and contractors across Lagos about the dangers of substandard construction practices, particularly in densely populated areas.
