Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, APC, accusing the ruling party of abandoning the ideals upon which it was founded.
Sylva announced his resignation in a letter dated August 31, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The former Bayelsa State governor said the decision followed consultations with his family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers.
Sylva, who described himself as a founding member of the APC, expressed disappointment over what he called the erosion of the party’s founding principles and criticised its leadership’s approach to politics.
He also accused the APC-led Federal Government of disappointing the majority of Nigerians, saying he sees little prospect of a change in direction.
Sylva further criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, accusing the anti-graft agency of becoming increasingly partisan and operating more like an organ of the ruling party than an institution of the state.
He acknowledged that his resignation and criticism of the EFCC could expose him and his associates to increased scrutiny but said he was willing to take the risk.
Sylva expressed confidence that Nigerians would seek a different political direction in the next election as political realignments continue ahead of the next electoral cycle.
