Tempers flared in the Senate on Tuesday as lawmakers debated the reassignment of Senator Natasha Akpoti’s seat. The Kogi Central senator was asked to move to a new seat following the defection of Senators Ned Nwoko and Francis Ezenwa from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which created a seating vacuum on the ruling party’s side of the chamber.
Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Tahir Monguno, cited Order 6 Rule 2 of the Senate Standing Rules, which grants the Senate President the authority to reallocate seats to any lawmaker at his discretion. He explained that Senator Akpoti’s refusal to relocate to her new seat would leave the Senate President with no option but to exercise his powers to restrict her from contributing to debates on the floor if she remains on her previous seat.
The reassignment has sparked controversy, with Senator Akpoti and her supporters expressing dissatisfaction over the move. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions in the Senate, particularly regarding seating arrangements and party affiliations.
