Senate Condemns Removal of Benue State Chief Judge, Calls for NJC Intervention

Date:

The Nigerian Senate has strongly condemned the removal of Benue State Chief Judge, Justice Maurice Ikpambes by the Benue State House of Assembly, describing the action as a violation of due process.

The Senate’s reaction came following a point of order raised by Senator Abba Moro, who decried the move as unconstitutional and urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to step in to resolve the matter.

Expressing similar concerns, Senator Seriake Dickson highlighted the constitutional implications of the removal, warning against actions that could undermine the independence of the judiciary.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also joined in the condemnation, noting that the issue was already before the disciplinary judges for review.

In response, the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the removal and is expected to submit its report within two weeks.
