Senate President Godswill Akpabio led a high-profile delegation of Senators to Calabar for the interment of Dr. Joseph Wayas, Nigeria’s second Senate President, who passed away three years ago. The ceremony was a tribute to a political giant whose contributions to Nigeria’s democracy remain significant.
During the ceremony, Akpabio described Dr. Wayas as a visionary leader who paved the way for many in politics. “His legacy serves as a guiding light for all of us committed to serving our nation,” Akpabio said. He also urged Wayas’ family to maintain unity and peace while calling on Nigerians to draw inspiration from the late statesman’s life to foster national cohesion.
Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu paid glowing tributes to Wayas, highlighting his courage and intellect. “Cross River is proud to have produced a leader who shaped Nigeria’s history with exceptional foresight,” Otu stated.
The interment was attended by dignitaries, including traditional rulers, former and current government officials, and political leaders. Earlier in the day, the Senate convened a valedictory session to honor Wayas’ contributions to the nation’s political evolution.
The event concluded with tributes, prayers, and a symbolic escort of Dr. Wayas’ remains to his hometown for burial.
