The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced a new date of August 30, 2025, for the conduct of local government elections across the state.
Originally slated for August 9, the polls were postponed due to the state of emergency declared in the state, according to RSIEC Chairman Michael Odey. The announcement was made Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the RSIEC headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Odey said the decision to shift the date was based on new security and logistical realities, adding that the commission has released a revised timetable and guidelines for all electoral activities.
Under the updated schedule, political parties are to hold their primaries between July 31 and August 3, with candidate submissions due on August 3 and 4. Electioneering campaigns are expected to commence on Tuesday, August 12, while ad-hoc staff recruitment will take place on Saturday, August 16. The final list of candidates will be published on August 20.
The meeting was attended by party leaders, civil society groups, and media representatives, who reviewed the adjusted electoral roadmap ahead of the grassroots polls.
