Former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has revealed that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may be planning a return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to seek its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sheriff made the disclosure on Monday during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme. He stated that reliable information available to him suggests Obi is likely to return to the PDP and contest under the party’s platform.
“Peter Obi ran under the Labour Party. His ambition is to become President,” Sheriff said. “Information available to me is that any moment from now, Obi would go back to the PDP and run as a presidential candidate under the PDP.”
The former governor added that the return of Obi could shape the internal dynamics of the PDP, where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is also expected to contest. According to Sheriff, Atiku would not settle for anything less than the presidency.
“Atiku has been the vice president of Nigeria. So for him, it is president or nothing,” he stated.
Obi, who recently aligned with a coalition formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had earlier indicated interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election through the coalition, which aims to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sheriff also referenced other potential contenders such as former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, questioning the influence and control each figure holds across the states.
