The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate Nigeria’s outstanding debt of €1,119,979.86 to the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) over concerns the arrears could attract sanctions and damage Nigeria’s diplomatic standing.
The resolution followed a motion raised on Tuesday by Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka, who drew attention to the fact that Nigeria has benefited from over €1.7 billion in development support under the OACPS-European Union partnership framework since 2020.
Hon. Isiaka warned that failure to clear the outstanding debt could jeopardise Nigeria’s development programmes and foreign policy interests, urging urgent intervention.
Consequently, the House mandated its Committees on Finance, National Planning, and Debt Management to assess the implications of continued membership and collaborate with relevant ministries and agencies to fast-track the settlement of the arrears. The committees are expected to report back within two weeks.
House Raises Alarm Over Insecurity in Kwara, Niger States
In a separate resolution, the House of Representatives also expressed deep concern over rising insecurity in parts of Kwara and Niger States, where reports indicate increased terrorist and bandit activity.
Lawmakers called for a decisive military operation to restore peace and protect residents in the affected areas, urging relevant security agencies to deploy adequate personnel and resources.
The House reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across all regions of the country.
