The Nigerian Senate has announced the postponement of the North-West Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, earlier scheduled to hold this weekend in Kano State.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during plenary on Tuesday, explaining that the postponement is in honour of the late elder statesman and philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who passed away on Sunday.
Akpabio further informed lawmakers that Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, is currently in Saudi Arabia to attend the burial rites of the deceased.
According to Akpabio, the postponed hearing will be rescheduled following consultations with stakeholders in the North-West zone.
He, however, confirmed that public hearings in the remaining five geopolitical zones—Borno (North-East), Plateau (North-Central), Enugu (South-East), Akwa Ibom (South-South), and Lagos (South-West)—will proceed as planned according to the committee’s timetable.
The constitution review process is part of the Senate’s broader legislative agenda to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic framework and address key national issues through stakeholder engagement across all regions.
