President Bola Tinubu has pledged his support for a proposal advocating the direct election of members into the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
President Tinubu, serving as the ECOWAS Chairman, made this commitment while inaugurating ninety-seven members into the 6th ECOWAS Parliament at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.
He assured members of the sixth ECOWAS Parliament that Nigeria, as the host nation, will continue to support them in achieving their objectives.
The Parliament comprises one hundred and fifteen seats, with each member state guaranteed a minimum of five seats, while the remaining forty seats are allocated based on population.
Nigeria holds thirty-five seats, with Benin Republic, Cabo Verde, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Togo each having five representatives.
Additionally, Ghana has eight members, Cote d’Ivoire seven, and Senegal and Guinea each have six.
Notably, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have no representatives in the sixth parliament, as these states have expressed their intention to withdraw from the bloc.
