Police operatives in Anambra State have arrested a 25-year-old man, Enediong Bassey, in possession of a pump-action gun concealed in a bag of rice.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrest was made on November 22, 2024, at Nkwelle-Ezunaka following credible intelligence.
“Police operatives attached to 3-3 Police Divisional Headquarters, led by CSP Emeka Obi, arrested Enediong Bassey, a native of Ikono LGA, Akwa Ibom State, and recovered a pump-action gun wrapped in a bag of rice,” the statement read.
Upon interrogation, the suspect admitted to being a member of a local vigilante group but confessed that he planned to flee with the weapon to join a criminal gang involved in armed robbery and other illicit activities.
Given the above and following other complaints and unprofessional conduct by some security outfits and vigilante members, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has emphasized the need for thorough profiling of vigilante members and other security operatives assisting the police.
He stressed that such measures are critical to ensuring professionalism and community safety.
The suspect has been transferred to the command’s anti-robbery squad for further investigation. The CP also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities.
