The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has condemned the assault on one of its members, Jennifer Elobor, by operatives of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, also known as Operation Udo Ga-Achi, in Anambra State.
In a statement on Wednesday, the NYSC Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, described the act as “unacceptable and dehumanising,” stressing that there was no justification for the manner in which the operatives conducted their operations.
A viral video of the incident showed Elobor being beaten and stripped of her clothing in the Oba community, Idemili South Local Government Area, after being falsely accused of fraud alongside other corps members.
The Anambra State Government confirmed on Tuesday that the operatives involved had been arrested and that investigations were ongoing. The NYSC commended the move and pledged full cooperation with the police to ensure justice.
“This we trust will help get justice for the corps member in question and any other aggrieved party,” the NYSC said. It added that administrative steps were being taken to provide Elobor with psychological and medical support to help her recover from the trauma.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) also condemned the assault, describing it as “inhumane” and a gross violation of human rights. NBA President Afam Osigwe and National Secretary Mobolaji Ojibara urged that the perpetrators be diligently prosecuted to serve as both justice for Elobor and a deterrent against future abuses.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria, with civil society groups, politicians, and citizens demanding accountability and stronger safeguards for corps members serving in communities nationwide.
