NLC to Meet Federal Government Over Survival Amid Petrol Price Hike

Date:

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to engage the federal government in discussions on how Nigerian workers can cope with the recent hike in the price of petrol.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day workshop in Lagos on Thursday, themed “Strategies for Effective Implementation of the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act”, NLC President Joe Ajaero highlighted that the current petrol price has severely diminished the impact of the proposed N70,000 minimum wage.

Ajaero accused President Bola Tinubu of misleading organized labour into agreeing to the minimum wage in exchange for the government’s decision to avoid increasing fuel prices.

He urged the government to address the rising hunger, poverty, and frustration among Nigerians before the situation worsens.

Recounting the negotiations with President Tinubu, Ajaero revealed that the NLC had been pressured to accept the minimum wage proposal to prevent a further petrol price hike.

He emphasized that organized labour rejected the President’s suggestion of a N250,000 minimum wage, as it would not offset the impact of fuel price increases on the Nigerian populace.

“There is a tactic to distract our attention with allegations of cybercrime, terrorism financing, and other charges. While we are being distracted, the issue of the petrol pump price remains,” Ajaero said.

Ajaero went on to explain that during negotiations, the NLC had made it clear to President Tinubu that a further increase in the petrol price would be detrimental to all Nigerians. Despite this, the NLC agreed to the N70,000 minimum wage, even though some members believe it is insufficient.

The NLC leader also touched on the reluctance of private sector employers to accept the new wage structure, noting that the private sector, federal, and state governments have all been resistant to labour’s demands.

The meeting between the NLC and the federal government is expected to explore solutions to mitigate the harsh effects of the fuel price hike on Nigerian workers.
