The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning following the release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam into the Rivers Niger and Benue.
Nigerians living in flood-prone areas have been urged to relocate to safer locations to avoid potential floods that may result from the dam’s water release.
NIHSA Director-General, Umar Mohammed, revealed during an interview that the release is being managed intermittently to control water flow and mitigate the risk of flooding across 11 states, including Adamawa, Benue, Kogi, and Delta.
He emphasized that preventive measures must be taken to avoid the devastating floods that occur annually due to the Lagdo Dam water release.
The release of water from the dam follows the overflow of Alau Dam in Maiduguri, which claimed over 30 lives and destroyed thousands of homes last weekend.
Mohammed urged residents to clear drainages and relocate from floodplains, adding that the federal government and relevant agencies, including NEMA, are on standby to manage any potential disaster.
