The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the release of results for the 2024 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE), revealing that 60.55% of candidates secured credit passes in both English Language and Mathematics.
Speaking at the NECO headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday, NECO Registrar, Professor Dantani Wushishi, disclosed that a total of 1,376,436 candidates sat for the exams, which took place between June 19th and July 26th, 2024.
The results were released just under two months after the final paper was written.
According to Wushishi, 83.9% of candidates obtained at least five credits, irrespective of their performance in English and Mathematics. He also highlighted a significant reduction in examination malpractice cases, with 8,407 candidates involved, down from 12,030 in the previous year.
“The 2024 SSCE was conducted smoothly, with the marking exercise concluding on September 8th, 2024,” the NECO boss noted.
In terms of gender distribution, 706,950 males and 669,473 females registered for the examination, with 702,112 males and 665,624 females ultimately sitting for the exams.
However, Wushishi expressed concern over the involvement of 40 schools in mass cheating across 17 states, adding that these schools are currently facing sanctions.
NECO has also recommended the blacklisting of 21 supervisors found guilty of extortion and other forms of misconduct.
