The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says the newly enacted NIMC Act 2026 will strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture by enhancing identity verification and supporting law enforcement operations.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with ADBN, the Commission’s Head of Legal and Regulatory Services, Barrister Festus Esangbedo, said the new General Multipurpose Card (GMPC) is equipped with advanced security features designed to prevent identity fraud and improve the integrity of the national identity system.
He disclosed that the identity framework has already assisted security agencies in the arrest of suspected terrorist commanders at border checkpoints.
According to him, the Commission is also working to provide authorised security and intelligence agencies with controlled access to the national identity database to support criminal investigations and national security operations while safeguarding citizens’ privacy.
Esangbedo explained that the NIMC Act 2026, which repeals the 2007 law, establishes a modern legal framework for Nigeria’s national identity system and expands the lawful use of identity data in tackling crime and strengthening national security.
