The Nigeria Police Force-National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has arrested 11 suspects involved in cybercrime, online fraud, and romance scams targeting Japanese women. The arrests were announced during a joint press briefing by the Centre’s Director, CP Ifeanyi Uche, and Superintendent Ikei Takashi of Japan’s National Police Agency.
The suspects, who had been under surveillance since 2022, were apprehended following a coordinated international investigation. Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Victor Isiku, revealed that two other members of the syndicate are still at large and announced the recovery of $33,320 from the suspects.
CP Uche and Superintendent Takashi emphasized that cybercrime knows no borders and can only be effectively tackled through international cooperation. They highlighted the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies across countries to combat the growing threat of cybercrime.
Authorities also issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant against online scams, particularly those involving romance and financial fraud. The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting citizens from online threats.
This operation underscores the increasing global efforts to address cybercrime and the importance of cross-border partnerships in ensuring cybersecurity.
