Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has congratulated Gbenga Ogunjimi for the honor bestowed on the Nigerian Center, which he founded in Washington, D.C. The center has been recognized for its contributions to the Nigerian and immigrant communities in the U.S. capital.
In a statement by NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, it was announced that October 1st has been officially declared as Nigerian American Day in Washington, D.C. The declaration was made by Kimberly Bessett, Secretary of the District of Columbia, on behalf of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
The honor acknowledges the Nigerian Center’s work in supporting immigrants in Washington, D.C., and highlights the contributions of Nigerians and Nigerian Americans, both in the District and across the United States. This milestone is seen as a significant achievement for Nigeria and its diaspora community.
Dabiri-Erewa commended Ogunjimi for this historic accomplishment, describing it as the first of its kind in the District of Columbia. She encouraged other Nigerians in the diaspora to emulate Ogunjimi’s dedication, emphasizing that hard work and commitment can lead to great success.
The Nigerian Center, according to Ogunjimi, offers a range of services including walk-in immigration support, free tax counseling through the IRS, and a micro-loan program. It also collaborates with African Ancestry Inc. to provide Nigerian language training classes.
