The national grid collapsed on Monday, leaving millions of Nigerians without power as electricity distribution companies confirmed the outage around 6:48 p.m.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), which serves parts of Lagos State, announced the collapse on its X handle: “Dear Valued Customer, Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 18:48hrs, resulting in a loss of power supply across our network. We are working with our partners for a speedy restoration.”
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) similarly informed customers of a “general system collapse” that affected supply across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States. The Kaduna and Abuja Electricity Distribution Companies also assured customers that efforts were underway to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized.
It was also a similar situation with the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company which promised the restoration of normalcy as soon as possible.
This incident marks another in a series of collapses this year, with previous outages occurring in February, March, April, July, and August.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to comment on the latest collapse. However, in April, TCN’s Executive Director of the Independent System Operator (ISO), Nafisat Ali, cited issues such as inadequate gas supply, poor plant coordination, and transmission challenges as contributors to grid instability.
