A civil society organisation has called on the Federal Government to disclose details of the contract for the 11-kilometre Summit Junction-Head Bridge section of the Benin-Onitsha corridor following controversy over an alleged ₦15 billion payment to the contractor.
Executive Director of the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice, Reverend David Ugolor, made the call while speaking with journalists in Abuja.
Ugolor says Nigerians deserve to know the terms of the contract and how the alleged ₦15 billion payment to the construction company was made.
He also called for an independent technical assessment of the project to determine the actual level and value of work carried out by the contractor.
According to him, the assessment should complement the internal review being conducted by the Federal Ministry of Works and provide greater transparency over the project.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, had on August 28 directed the ministry’s controller to locate and arrest the Managing Director of the construction company and commence efforts to recover funds allegedly paid to the contractor.
