Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed full confidence in Liam Delap, describing the club’s latest signing as a “future England number nine” ahead of his debut at the Club World Cup.
Delap, 21, joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town in a £30 million transfer, reuniting with Maresca, who previously coached him at Manchester City’s academy. The young striker penned a six-year contract with the London side earlier this month.
Following a standout season in the Premier League, where he netted 12 goals in 37 appearances, Delap now looks to hit the ground running as Chelsea take on Los Angeles FC tonight at 8:00 PM Nigerian time.
Speaking ahead of the match, Maresca said bringing in Delap was an easy decision.
“I have no doubt he can be England’s future number nine,” Maresca said. “He understands the system, works hard, and has the right mentality to succeed at the highest level.”
Delap had to withdraw from England’s UEFA Under-21 Championship squad to join Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the United States, underlining the importance placed on his integration into the new squad.
All eyes will be on the young forward tonight as he prepares to make his first appearance in Chelsea colours on the global stage.
