Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has condemned the brutal killings in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, describing the attacks as “mindless barbarism” and “totally unacceptable.”
Akume, a former governor of Benue State, expressed deep mourning over the massacre of over 200 innocent persons, mainly women and children, in the latest episode of violence that has plagued the state. His reaction came through a statement by his spokesperson, Terrence Kuanum.
“It is totally unacceptable that over 200 innocent persons, mostly women and children, will have their lives cut short in such cruel manner,” Akume stated.
He extended heartfelt condolences to bereaved families and survivors and called for an immediate end to such atrocities across the country.
Referencing his time as governor, Akume acknowledged the complexities of tackling insecurity and urged political, religious, and traditional leaders to unite in combating violence not just in Benue, but nationwide.
Expressing hope in President Bola Tinubu’s directive to military service chiefs to restore order in Benue, Akume urged residents to remain resolute and cooperate with security forces.
“This fight against insecurity is central to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s administration,” he noted.
Akume’s condemnation adds to the growing national outrage over the escalating violence in Benue, where attacks by suspected herdsmen have led to hundreds of deaths and mass displacements in recent weeks.
