The Lagos State Government has announced plans to host the maiden edition of the Lagos Grand Horse Race from September 11 to 13, 2026, at the National Stadium, Surulere, as part of efforts to promote tourism, preserve cultural heritage and stimulate economic activities.
The three-day event, themed “Race Into the Future,” is expected to attract more than 30,000 participants from Nigeria and other countries.
Speaking at a media briefing, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Oloruntoyin Bopo Oyekan Ismaila, represented by the ministry’s Director of Administration and Human Resources, Taoreed Dosunmu, said the event is designed to position Lagos as a leading tourism destination.
She explained that the festival will combine horse racing with music, fashion, food, cultural exhibitions and fundraising activities, while creating business opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, artists and other players in the tourism value chain.
Convener of the Lagos Grand Horse Race, Femi Fasoro, said about 100 horses and traditional horsemen from across the country are expected to participate in the competition.
He added that the event will also feature cultural performances, music concerts and networking sessions aimed at attracting investors and strengthening the tourism industry in Lagos State.
