Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians, particularly parents and guardians, that attacks on schools and the abduction of students will soon become a thing of the past as the police have put measures in place to tackle the menace.

The IGP gave the assurance in Minna, Niger State, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the North Central Zone, Alhaji Ishyaku Mohammed, during an address to officers and men of the Niger State Police Command.

According to him, one of the measures introduced is the activation of mechanisms aimed at protecting educational institutions and ensuring that children can continue their education without fear or intimidation.

Disu disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force has established a School Protection Unit headed by a Chief Superintendent of Police and is providing the necessary support to strengthen school security nationwide.

He added that protocols have also been developed for school owners to follow in order to mitigate attacks on educational institutions and safeguard students and staff.

The Inspector General further dismissed fears over the alleged invasion of Niger State by the Lakurawa terrorist group through Zuguruma town, assuring residents that the police are on top of the situation and have already directed immediate intervention.

He noted that all Deputy Inspectors General of Police have been deployed to their respective geopolitical zones to assess peculiar security challenges and ensure prompt action.

Disu commended officers and men of the force for their sacrifices and dedication in the fight against crime and called on members of the public to support security agencies with credible information.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Niger State, Abdullahi Elleman, identified the state’s vast landmass, difficult terrain and extensive forests as major operational challenges, particularly in the Niger North Senatorial District.

In a related development, a retired Director of the Department of State Services, Dennis Amachree, has warned that corruption and lack of patriotism among Nigeria’s political class constitute a major threat to national security.

Speaking during the presentation of his book titled “DSS@40: My Journey Behind The Shield,” Amachree argued that many of the country’s security challenges are rooted in political failures and governance deficits rather than solely the activities of insurgents and criminal groups.

He maintained that endemic corruption and the failure of political leaders to deliver the dividends of democracy have contributed significantly to instability and socioeconomic challenges facing the nation.
