The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has confirmed that the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, was questioned as part of its ongoing investigation into the disputed Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, insisting that he was not arrested.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Commission said Gbajabiamila voluntarily honoured an invitation from investigators in compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to probe how the alleged fake agency operated from the Federal Secretariat in Abuja for about two years.
According to the ICPC, the Chief of Staff visited the Commission on Monday, responded to questions from investigators and left after providing the required information.
The anti corruption agency stressed that his appearance was voluntary and formed part of efforts to establish the facts surrounding the activities of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, which the Presidency has disowned as a fraudulent organisation.
Earlier, Gbajabiamila’s lawyer, Jiti Ogunye, confirmed that his client appeared before the Commission in full cooperation with investigators, gave his testimony and returned to his official duties after the session.
The controversy centres on Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, who allegedly presented himself as the Director General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council and claimed he was appointed by Gbajabiamila.
Adeyemi, who was arrested last week, also alleged that he paid money to the Chief of Staff to secure the appointment.
Gbajabiamila has denied the allegations and has instituted legal action against Adeyemi, while the Presidency has maintained that the council was never legally established.
President Bola Tinubu subsequently directed the ICPC to investigate the circumstances surrounding the operations of the alleged agency, with the Commission stating that investigations remain ongoing and further updates will be provided when necessary.
