The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministry of Works, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to sensitize petroleum transport unions on safety compliance. The lawmakers also called for strict enforcement of regulations, particularly against the indiscriminate parking of tankers along major roads in Bida, Niger State.
This resolution followed a motion by Hon. Saidu Abdullahi, who expressed concern that unregulated tanker parking disrupts economic activities and poses a threat to public order. The motion highlighted the need for proactive measures to address the safety risks associated with the improper parking of petroleum tankers.
In a related development, the House resolved to restrict the movement of trailers and trucks within Lokoja to nighttime operations, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., to improve road safety and traffic management. This decision followed a motion by Hon. Danladi Suleiman Aguye, who highlighted the frequent fatal accidents on the Lokoja-Felele-Benin-Lagos Expressway. These accidents have claimed many lives, including students, and have raised concerns about the safety of road users.
The resolutions underscore the House’s commitment to addressing road safety challenges and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic on major highways.
