England Manager, Gareth Southgate has resigned after a second consecutive European Championship final defeat.
His resignation comes in the wake of England’s defeat in the Euro 2024 final against Spain two days ago.
Southgate, who led England through 102 games over eight years, including four major tournaments, cited the need for change and a new chapter in a statement released two days after the final.
His decision comes as his contract was nearing its expiration later this year.
Southgate noted that it has been an honour of his life to play for England and to manage England since his appointment in 2016.
The 53-year-old made history by guiding England to two consecutive European Championship finals, a feat unmatched since Sir Alf Ramsey led England to World Cup victory in 1966.
Southgate’s tenure also saw England reach the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the quarter-finals in 2022.
Despite his achievements, criticism mounted during the recent Euro 2024 campaign, with fans voicing concerns over the team’s performance, particularly in utilizing its talented attacking players.
