The Federal Government has intensified plans to implement 112 as Nigeria’s single national emergency number, with fresh consultations expected with state governors and emergency response agencies to ensure a coordinated nationwide rollout.

The decision followed a meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima and a delegation from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), led by the Chairman of its Governing Board, Chief Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, at the State House in Abuja.

The move comes days after the National Economic Council approved the adoption of 112 as the unified emergency number across all levels of government to strengthen Nigeria’s emergency response system.

Vice President Shettima directed the NCC to develop a clear implementation roadmap and collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to align the initiative with global best practices. He also assured that funding would be mobilised through the National Economic Council and private sector partnerships.

Earlier, NCC Board Chairman, Chief Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, disclosed that the Commission has established about 35 Emergency Communications Centres across the country and stressed the need for stronger commitment from state governments and emergency response agencies to ensure the centres operate effectively.

He said the success of the initiative depends on seamless collaboration among the Nigeria Police Force, ambulance services, NEMA and other emergency responders to guarantee timely assistance for citizens in distress.
