The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs (FMWA) has strongly refuted claims circulating in a recent video alleging that survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) have been abandoned. The ministry described these claims as false and misleading, emphasizing that they undermine efforts to protect and empower survivors.
In a statement, the FMWA clarified that it operates only one temporary shelter in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), designed for urgent cases requiring federal intervention. Survivors in this shelter receive immediate support before being transitioned to appropriate state-based systems.
The ministry outlined several steps taken to support survivors, including visits to the FCT shelter, psychosocial counseling, medical care, and long-term support plans. Additionally, the FMWA conducted a nationwide needs assessment in 2024 to improve survivor services and enhance collaboration with state authorities.
The FMWA promised to continue strengthening SGBV response systems, finalizing a National Action Plan, and partnering with experts to improve shelter operations and care. The ministry urged the public to seek factual information directly from its official channels.
