The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has issued an early warning to residents living along water channels, urging them to relocate before the onset of the rainy season.
The Acting Director General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, made the appeal following a weather forecast by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET), which predicted sunny skies over the FCT with slim chances of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours.
According to NIMET, while sunny conditions are expected to persist in the coming days, isolated thunderstorms may occur over parts of Kogi and Benue, with the possibility of strong winds accompanying the onset of rainfall.
Engr. Abdulrahman emphasized that early rainfall is often accompanied by violent and destructive winds, posing risks to those residing in flood-prone areas. He advised residents to take precautionary measures, including relocating from high-risk zones and clearing blocked drains to ensure the free flow of water.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to disaster preparedness, urging the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories.
