The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a stern warning to Ikeja and Eko Distribution Companies (DisCos) to halt any withdrawal or replacement of Unistar meters until full compliance with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) directive on the structured replacement of faulty and obsolete end-user meters is ensured.
The FCCPC’s caution followed concerns that its recent directive to the DisCos to cease activities related to the planned Unistar meter replacements might be ignored.
In a statement, Ondaje Ijagwu, Director of Corporate Affairs at FCCPC, reiterated that the directive remains in effect and warned that any violations would result in severe consequences. He clarified that NERC’s approval of new meter prices is unrelated to the proposed Unistar meter replacement and affirmed that both FCCPC and NERC have invalidated the planned exercise.
Consumers have been urged to report any attempts by the DisCos to flout the directive using FCCPC’s dedicated communication channels. The commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers from unfair practices by service providers in the electricity sector.
