The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has called for specialised training and continuous professional development for journalists covering competition and consumer protection.
The Commission says improved knowledge among journalists will help strengthen public awareness of consumer rights and promote understanding of fair competition.
FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, represented by the Executive Commissioner for Operations, Louis Odion, made the call when newly elected executives of the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria, CICAN, visited the Commission in Abuja.
Bello says the FCCPC is willing to consider the association’s request for capacity-building programmes to improve journalists’ understanding of competition and consumer protection issues.
He also stressed the importance of improving knowledge of competition law within the judiciary, noting that the Commission recently supported training for judges through the National Judicial Institute.
Chairman of CICAN Abuja, Gabriel Kuma, called for stronger engagement between regulators and the media through regular dialogue, access to credible information and capacity-building initiatives.
