Enugu State Labour Movement Clarifies Minimum Wage Implementation Amid Misunderstanding

Date:

Enugu State Labour Movement has clarified a statement attributed to the Assistant General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Chris Onyeka, regarding the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage in the state.

Mr. Onyeka had listed Enugu State among several states allegedly yet to implement the minimum wage as stipulated by the Minimum Wage Act of 2019.

However, the State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Comrade Ben Asogwa, countered the claim, suggesting that there might have been a misunderstanding concerning Enugu State’s status.

According to Comrade Asogwa, Governor Peter Mbah’s administration has approved the full implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage for local government workers and primary school teachers upon assuming office.

Moreover, there has been recent approval for the implementation of the 100% Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for nurses and midwives, as well as for the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals in the state.

Despite these developments, the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah has assured workers that his administration would adhere to the outcome of the federal-level negotiations once they are concluded.

This stance indicates the State Government’s commitment to upholding workers’ rights and ensuring fair compensation in line with national standards.
