Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Balogun has etched her name in history as the first female pilot in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), breaking barriers and inspiring a generation through her remarkable journey.
Born in Kaduna and hailing from Odo-Otin Local Government Area in Osun State, Balogun’s aviation career began in 2002 when she was recruited as a Customs Assistant to serve as a cabin crew member in the NCS Airwing Unit. Over the years, her determination and resilience transformed her role from flight attendant to licensed pilot, a feat she achieved with the support of the NCS.
In a recent interview, DSC Balogun reflected on her journey, emphasizing the challenges and triumphs she experienced.
“Staying in the Service when many of my colleagues opted for better-paying airline jobs was a tough decision, but I was determined to contribute to public service and achieve my dream of becoming a pilot,” she said.
Balogun’s academic and professional achievements include an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and a Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida. Her pilot training was fully sponsored by the NCS, highlighting the organization’s commitment to capacity building and innovation.
“My role as the first female pilot in the service reflects my commitment as a woman to advancing my passionate dream as well as the operational capabilities of the NCS,” Balogun noted. She views her achievement as an inspiration to women within and beyond the Service, encouraging them to pursue their ambitions despite challenges.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, commended Balogun’s dedication and groundbreaking accomplishment.
In a statement, he described her success as “a testament to the Service’s commitment to capacity building and innovation.”
As DSC Olanike Balogun continues her work as a pilot for the NCS, she remains passionate about inspiring others, particularly young Nigerians and women. “I hope my journey motivates young Nigerians, especially women, to chase their dreams and break through barriers,” she affirmed.
