Deputy Speaker Kalu Seeks Global Support for Nigeria’s Constitutional Reform Agenda

Date:

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to an inclusive and comprehensive constitutional reform process, urging the international community to support the nation’s efforts through strategic partnerships and knowledge sharing.

Speaking at the Constitution Review Diplomatic Dinner held in Abuja, Hon. Kalu—who also chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Review—described the gathering as more than a ceremonial event, emphasizing its role as a strategic platform for collaboration in reshaping the legal framework of Africa’s largest democracy.

He disclosed that 87 constitutional amendment proposals are currently under review. These include key national priorities such as gender inclusion, state policing, fiscal federalism, judicial reforms, devolution of powers, and local government autonomy.

Appealing to diplomatic missions for their support, the Deputy Speaker called for technical expertise, exchange visits, and inter-parliamentary cooperation to enrich the ongoing review process.

Diplomatic representatives present at the event pledged their continued backing for Nigeria’s reform efforts. They commended the country as a “walking, talking example of gender inclusion,” while highlighting the importance of political, financial, and social inclusion in deepening democratic governance.
